Starting in 2022, I have painted a mirror study every month.

Monthly Mirror Studies

Colorful abstract portrait of a man's face with short dark hair and a beard, painted with expressive brushstrokes in bright colors including pink, yellow, blue, green, and black.

First mirror study of the official monthly series, painted in January of 2022

the last Mirror study of 2025

How it started:

I had been painting self portraits here and there over the years, sketches of myself from my reflection in my phone screen in a sketchbook and then a few paintings on paper and small panels in 2020 &2021. towards the end of 2021 I tried out a couple mirror studies and they felt really interesting. I had painted them a few months apart but had learned a lot each time.

In 2022 I challenged myself to paint a mirror study every month for a year. I wanted to approach each one differently. Test out new colors, move the mirror around, use different materials, different levels of abstraction, changing the lighting, things like that. With each passing month it got easier to remember and felt less like a difficult challenge and became something I was just going to do that month. By the time I painted the 12th one, “completing my challenge”, I had learned and was learning so much that I just couldn’t imagine stopping while it felt like I was still in the foothills of the mountain of knowledge I could attain if I stuck with it. so I just kept going, one mirror study at a time. I am now entering my 5th year of monthly studies and the journey continues.

In May of 2025, I learned about Anders Zorn, I saw a demonstration of using a limited palette to create so many colors with very few to start with. It made my brain light up, and I had to try it. The last 7 self studies I've utilized 6 different limited palettes and all I can say is that it’s completely changed the way I navigate my paints and see color. It makes me so glad I didn’t stop after the first 12 self studies and move on. Studying with limited pallets and seeing really just how far I can push my paints is showing me how much I already have. While also showing me that there will always be something new to learn.

April 10-12

Mirror study started as a simple challenge to myself and became one of my most powerful learning tools. In this class I will share my approach in:

Learning by doing, painting with “no mistakes”, testing new mediums in a controlled setting, world building, making and breaking rules, and some very basic rendering, proportion and color theory. I will break down the very basics like setting up a paint palette, how to read the key on your paint tube, as well as show you a variety of layer building ideas and tools to open up your paints potential and nurture an environment where you can make confident marks and bold decisions.

I will provide everything you need to complete your self study. We will be working in a limited pallet, I will be teaching with professional quality acrylic paints and colored pencils. Feel free to bring anything you’d like to work with knowing that I will be teaching you with tools I am most familiar with.

Live demos, group discussion, one on one feedback, and independent work time in my studio.

By the end of our 3 days together you will leave the studio with your completed 9×12 Self Portrait.

This class has been so fun to incorporate into my creative practice and I can’t wait for the experience you’ll gain from taking it to influence your approach in painting for yourself.
